John Rietberg first entered the stage at the tender age of seven in 1970, playing (or miming, rather) the recorder.
He soon switched to drums performing regularly with local bands from 1975 onwards, playing for real this time. It was when John attended a concert in Amsterdam by rock legends Status Quo a couple of years later that he decided to become a professional drummer. In the early nineteen eighties, while studying at the Hilversum Conservatorium, his dream came true, finding himself touring through Europe and the United States with numerous groups as well as performing solo. During these tours he made several radio and television appearances such as the Austrian Country & Western Festival, a Dutch youth programme called 'Je Ziet Maar' , national Dutch radio show 'Countdown Café' and various live rockshows broadcast across Europe on Sky TV.
At the turn of the millennium, in the year 2000, John celebrated his 25th anniversary with Dutch tear-jerk sensation “de Zingende Fresia’s”. He then decided to broaden his horizon and shifted his focal point towards theatre. His one man show titled “Umleitung” (German for diversion) gave him a nice experience and a very good basis to develop his act as a stand-up comedian.
John’s first ever gig as stand up comedian was in the United Kingdom where Geoff Whiting of Mirth Control provided the opportunity for John to show his skills at the Comedy Cavern in Bath. We are talking January 2007.
Today John has completed five fleeting visits to the UK to perform his stand-up show at various venues each time and in the same period also managed to play a handful of shows in Dutch in Amsterdam.
With plenty of ambition, expect to see John perform again in the UK in 2008. He is planning shows The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Spain. For the shows in Germany John will be working on a show in German.
